The name ZippyRippy implies fast DVD conversion depending on your machines speed. We make an uncompressed file to convert from as this makes the conversion faster, less taxing on the system, generating less heat and using less energy. We’re all about “green” here.

ZippyRippy is a new program developed with one goal in mind, ripping DVD media for use on personal devices.  ZippyRippy is set apart by the idea that DVD conversion should be automatic without the need to endlessly tweak controls.

If a DVD with a valid VIDEO_TS folder is detected when ZippyRippy is launched, it will start going into action based on previously established preferences.

  1. Create an .iso disk image of the DVD for archiving or backup.

  2. Convert for all Apple devices including: iPod, iPhone/iPod touch, AppleTV.

  3. Rip the main feature of a DVD squeeze itself to a standard 4.3 GB DVD.  This is also handy to skip menus and previews on most DVD’s.

  4. h.264 mpeg4 encoding option, great for AppleTV

  5. Set it up to launch when a video DVD is inserted into the drive for automatic ripping and encoding.

Setup: You can either choose to launch it from where you have it installed, or you can set it to launch when you insert a video DVD in the disc drive.  To do that open System Preferences from the Apple menu and go to the CD/DVD preferences pane.

Use: Once the app is open you will be presented with either the regular interface which looks like a Finder copy window or the preferences panel.  This depends on what preferences you have set.  If you have it set to not show the preferences window on launch of the application then the app will use the preferences saved from the last time they were changed.

The window can also be set to close after 60 seconds to keep the automatic portion of the app intact.  This way if you insert a DVD in the drive and you walk away from the computer the preferences window will close and save any new preferences selected and start the rip.

If you’re interested in having it all happen for you in one session, just click all the checkboxes, you’ll then end up with a version compatible with app Apple devices, a rip of the main feature to another DVD suitable for car DVD players or just to prevent seeing previews or navigating menus, and one archived version packaged as an .iso disk image for backup purposes.

ZippyRippy is also energy efficient.  We take from the DVD an uncompressed version of the main title and use that to convert to other formats. This saves time and energy as the it reduces the amount of time the disc in the drive needs to spin.  Once the initial uncompressed file is created the disc will spin down and the conversion will begin.
